NEW ORLEANS — Beads, beads, beads! It is officially the start of the Mardi Gras season.

While letting the good times roll is normal in The Big Easy, anything can happen, which is why it is important to stay safe during the festivities.

Here are some tips to help you stay safe as you celebrate carnival:

  • Stay hydrated. Make sure to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.

  • Know your route. Before attending, research the parade route and surrounding areas.

  • Stick with your group. Travel with your group at all times; plan out a route to take if you become separated.

  • Watch your step. There is debris everywhere during a parade; make sure to walk carefully.

  • Don't chase throws. Never try to retrieve throws as floats are in motion; if you want a fallen throw, wait for the float to pass by or ask a nearby officer to hand it to you.

  • Watch for throws. Heavy beads and other parade items are flying; make sure to protect yourself at all times.

  • Dress for the weather. Dress appropriately for the weather, as temperatures can change.

  • Respect the barricade. Stay aware of road closures, and never jump over parade barriers.

  • Stay Alert. Always keep an extra eye on what is happening around you; if you see something suspicious, report it immediately.

If you or someone else suffers an injury or has an emergency, call 911 or find a nearby first responder.

Stay safe out there and have a happy Mardi Gras.
